You know how, from time to time, you see this piece of news talking about the crash of a plane?
That’s the media, choosing to talk about the average of 0,00025% of all the flights that happened in a given year.
Why that choice?
Well, our brains are hardwired to focus on drama and stories. It was what allowed us to survive as humans, for years now.
Today, more than ever, we have the ability to know the world, to be in touch with whatever’s happening in almost all places in the world.
But are we choosing what we see? No.
You see, even though the ability to broadcast the world is higher than ever, we’re still seeing mostly “the bad stuff”, even though the world has never been less violent or safe.
Still, we are prone to fear.
Fears that once kept our ancestors alive, help journalists have a job today.
Should you ignore the pain that manifests in the world these days? No! Of course not! It still exists and should be changed.
However, keep some distance and perspective. Remind yourself that the world is better than ever, and it will keep going that route as long as people like you and me make that a priority in our “small” lives.
