When I started my jazz career, as a young student, a lot of the “early jazz” sounded boring.
Fortunately, I’ve shaped my tastes and started to understand the genre better and, today, I’m a big fan of all the jazz there is.
However, this couldn’t have happened without the help of musicians that bridged the gap between what I liked and what jazz was. Usually, explorers, trying to break free from the boxes of their respective zeitgeist.
One of them was Wayner Shorter.
The first time I heard and played “Speak no Evil”, my relationship with traditional jazz shifted.
Wayne died today and I am sad about it.
